Election Deepfake Disclosures

Chapter 199 addresses a person who creates and distributes a deceptive and fraudulent deepfake of a candidate appearing on the ballot within 90 days before an election, with the specified knowledge and absent the required disclosure. The statutory trigger is narrower than all manipulated political media.

Analysis · October 5, 2026

Arizona’s scope combines candidate identity, timing, creation and distribution, deception, and knowledge. Each element matters. The recorded election measure does not establish a general ban on AI-generated content or a complete account of Arizona’s other synthetic-media remedies.

Coverage still under review

Verify general session effective-date evidence, exceptions and remedies, companion civil deepfake law, later bills, agency action, and courts. Selected current and concluded bills, agency rules, enforcement, and litigation have not been comprehensively screened. An omitted measure is not a finding that no relevant law exists.

Scope and method

This update expands the existing selected-law baseline using official legislative texts, codification, bill histories, and agency material. It distinguishes the act’s effective date from later duties and does not infer implementation from the passage of a deadline.

The analysis date is not a new verification date for every provision. Earlier dates remain where final text or date evidence was inaccessible. Only the separately identified in-force records enter the national export; proposed, future, and uncertain measures are excluded.
